Steel bridge joints (expansion joints) and bearings

We offer comprehensive solutions in the field of steel bridge joints and bridge bearings. We provide the supply and installation of bridge joints that enable safe and smooth movement of the expansion units of your bridge structures.

We also supply and install bridge bearings of various types, customized to your needs and ensuring the stability and long-term functionality of your bridges and industrial structures. Our priority is high quality, reliability and customer satisfaction.

Steel bridge joints

Bridge joints are designed for use in structural engineering to connect two expansion joints that change their length due to temperature changes. Bridge joints are suitable for concrete, steel and composite bridges, made in all load categories as perpendicular, mitre up to 45°, curved in height , including sidewalks and reflective lanes. Bridge joints are constructed that the substructure prevents the passage of stray currents and are waterproofed.

Types of bridge joints

Bridge bearings

Bridge bearings are designed to accommodate bridges and industrial objects, they ensure the transmission of vertical and horizontal loads. Depending on the type, they allow fixed, omnidirectional and unidirectional sliding in the horizontal plane and limited omnidirectional tilting. With their light weight and low design height, they meet the static requirements. They are to be installed in a substantially horizontal position. Standard bearings can be used in normal environments (medium climatic zone, inland) with temperatures from -30°C to +80°C.

  • The bridge bearings meet the requirements of STN EN 1337.
  • Dimensions, tolerances and manufacturing procedures are in accordance with 1090-1+A1 and 1090-2.
  • At the same time, technical quality procedures and regulations comply with the design and manufacturing of the bearings according to the requirements and location.

Types of bridge bearings

Elastomeric bearings STN EN 1337 – 3

Elastomeric laminated bearings (hereinafter referred to as ‘elastomeric bearings’) are intended for the bearing of load-bearing structures of bridges, building structures, civil and structural engineering. They can be used for the foundation of construction projects in seismically active areas. They are used in normal environments (medium climatic zone, inland) with the temperature range from -30°C to +50°C.

Standard elastomeric bearings are used in those cases where the vertical load is greater than or equal to Fmin. In other cases, anchor elastomer bearings are used. Where the vertical load is less than Fmin, anchor elastomer bearings must be used where the position of the reinforced elastomer on the elastomer bearing anchor plate is secured by an anti-slip lock or bolted. The vertical load in both cases must not exceed Fmax.

Elastomer bearings meet the requirements of STN EN 1337-1 Structural bearings. Part 1: General design rules.
Dimensions and tolerances are in accordance with STN EN 22768-1 General tolerances. Non-prescribed limit deviations of linear and angular dimensions and STN EN 22768-2 General tolerances – Part 2: Non-prescribed geometric tolerances.

Pot bearings STN EN 1337 – 5

A pot bearing in a steel pot encloses an elastomeric flexible insert which behaves like liquid at high pressure. When deformed, it allows the cover plate to tilt around any horizontal axis. Depending on the type of bearing – fixed, unidirectional or omnidirectional sliding, the bearing can transmit vertical loads and corresponding horizontal forces or displacements in the longitudinal or transverse direction.

A fixed bearing is non-sliding, it can transmit horizontal forces in either direction. A fixed bearing has a theoretical displacement of zero, but in practice the gap between the pot and the lid is about 1 mm.

A unidirectional bearing is sliding in one direction, it can transmit horizontal forces in a 90° direction. The bearing has a central guide rail. The transverse displacement is theoretically zero, in practice it is 1 mm clearance in the guide rail. The walls of both the sliding plate and the guide rail are made of high polish sheet metal, sliding properties are guaranteed. The standard longitudinal displacement is ± 50 mm.

The omnidirectional bearing is slidable in all directions and cannot transmit any horizontal forces. The standard transverse displacement is ± 20 mm. The standard longitudinal displacement is ± 50 mm. Larger longitudinal and transverse displacements are to be taken into account based on individual customer requirements.

Spherical bearings STN EN 1337 – 7

The spherical bearing consists of a base plate made of a concave pot which is lined with 5mm thick PTFE which is made with lubrication holes. Before assembly, these are filled with lubricant to reduce frictional resistance in the space between the concave and convex parts. Followed by the convex cover plate, on whose curved spherical surface there is a layer of hard chrome with a thickness of 100 to 200 µm, which provides excellent surface corrosion protection and, with its minimal roughness, optimum properties for sliding tilt in all directions.

Spherical bearings are used in combination with planar sliding elements as omnidirectional movable or directionally guided bearings when a PTFE plate is placed on the upper surface of the convex cover plate and filled with a special lubricant, as in the case of the convex-concave bearing, and a sliding stainless steel plate A4 (1.4401) in a mirror-gloss finish is welded on the lower surface of the sliding plate. Without the use of planar sliding elements, they are used as fixed bearings.

Guide bearings STN EN 1337 -8

The product is intended for the bearing of load-bearing structures of bridges, civil and structural engineering building structures. They are used to contain displacements and horizontal forces. Depending on the type, they are combined with elastomer bearings and additional elements that extend the range of application with sliding systems or systems limiting their action in either direction.
